Public holidays in Spain 2022 & 2023

Here is a list of all the Spanish public holidays you need to know in 2022 and 2023 and other important dates to note on your calendar.

If you are already working in Spain or if you are coming to Spain for a trip or business, it is important to note Spain’s business calendar, public holidays and important dates. This is because on some of these dates, businesses and public offices are closing or opening hours are reduced. To ensure you don’t miss anything important, this content brings together a list of Spain’s public holidays and important dates for your calendar.

Introduction to Public Holidays in Spain

The government in Spain sets Spanish national holidays each year, but Spanish public holidays differ between each region. While national holidays are observed in every city in Spain, regional holidays are determined by local governments.

Spanish national holidays are busy periods, especially if a holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday and workers receive a four-day puente (bridge) holiday (dias festivos or vacaciones – Spanish holiday). However, the government’s proposal to shift Spain’s public holidays to Mondays and avoid this practice has not passed yet.

Public holidays that fall on weekends in Spain are sometimes replaced by alternate days (usually the following Monday) if the regional government so chooses. But more recently, alternate days have not always been given.

Many businesses also close on national and regional holidays in Spain. Each year, you can check the Spanish holiday list on your local autonomous community’s website, which usually puts out a list at the beginning of each year.
